What is ”Shinto”? Vol.1

About "Shinto"

Attention; On this article, I write the topic about some religions a bit. However, I will never  recommend or criticize some specific religions.

Why do Japanese people observe Christmas even though most of them aren’t Christians?

It may makes you surprised; about 60 percent of Japanese are members of no religion.

Then, about 30 percent of them are Buddhist.

【The great statue of Buddha in Todai-ji temple; Nara prefecture】

By the way, how many Christians are there? The answer is…less than 1 percent only!

So, why do Japanese people observe Christmas even though most of them aren’t Christians?

I think there are mainly two reasons.

First, Japanese love festivals(^▽^)

Second, Japanese think there is a lot of “Holy spirits” around the world.

“Shinto” as the concept

Monotheism, the religion to believe the absolute has never been born in Japan.

Instead of that, Polytheism, the religion to believe so many “Holy spirits” like the ancient Egypt and Greece has been existed in the mind of Japanese people Before Christ.

Actually we call it “Shinto”.

However, there isn’t the character “教” which means “Religion”, the founder, and the scripture like other religions.

That’s why I think “Shinto” is not the religion but the “Concept”.

【Izumo-shrine; Shimane prefecture】

There are “Holy spirits” on everything in the nature, So we have to appreciate and respect them—It’s the basic belief of “Shinto”.

And then, we call the countless “Holy spirits” which exist in the nature as “Yaoyorozu-no-Kamigami” in Japanese.

In the famous animation film “Spirited Away” presented by Studio Ghibli, so many kinds of “Yaoyorozu-no-Kamigami” come to Yuya, where the heroine is working.

Also, in the animation film “My Neighbor TOTORO” by Studio Ghibli too, the tree like that picture has been drown. The rope which is enveloping the tree is the evidence there is one of the “Yaoyorozu-no-Kamigami”.

Therefore, TOTORO is also a member of “Yaoyorozu-no-Kamigami”!

I’ll introduce you about “Shinto” in detail next time.
