Now it’s the season of raining in Japan and it’s already hot outside, so this time, I’ll introduce you some Japanese onomatopoeias which are related raining and water!
Japanese onomatopoeias of raining
“Zaa-zaa”
When we have a strong raining, we say that a strong rain is raining with the sound of “Zaa-zaa”.
And, the situation that it’s raining strongly, we say it’s “Zaa-zaa-buri”, “buri” means “raining” in Japanese.
“Saaa”
When we have a nomal rain, the onomatopoeia “Saaa” is used to express.
“Potsuri-potsuri”,”Potsu-potsu”,”Pichon”
When it starts to rain, we use the onomatopoeia “Potsu(ri)-potsu(ri)”.
And then, when a drop of a rain has fallen, we use “Pichon” for that.
“Bisho-bisho”, “Bicho-bicho”
When you get wet by a rain, we say that it’s “Bisho-bisho” or “Bicho-bicho”.
In the case of that, go home and take a shower to let your body warm as soon as possible!
“Byuu-byuu”, “Gou-gou”
Even if it’s not raining, when we have a strong wind, we say the wind is blowing with the sound of “Byuu-byuu” or “Gou-gou”.
“Pota-pota”
You may hear the sound which drops are falling in your home, and its sound is “Pota-pota” in Japanese.
“Goro-goro”, “Pishaan”, “Pika”, “Gara-gara”
When we have a bad weather, the lightning might be stuck somewhere.
Before a lightning is stuck, the sound is “Goro-goro”, and when a lightning is stuck, the sound is “Pishaan” or “Pika”. And after lightning was stuck, the sound is “Gara-gara”.
“Do-do-do-do-do”
After a heavy rainfall, a river will flow over.
The sound of that is “Do-do-do-do-do”, and never go to a river!
And also it’s the sound of waterfall.
“Gero-gero”, “Kero-kero”, “Guwa-guwa”
Speaking of the creature in the raining season is a frog.
The crying of a frog is “Gero-gero”, “Kero-kero”, and “Guwa-guwa” in Japanese, and we have a such song for children.

Japanese onomatopoeias of water
“Basha-basha”
For example, when you wash your face,
or put your legs into a ponding, we use “Basha-basha”; it’s the sound when some water splashes.
“Basshaan”
A lot of water will splash when a person dives into a pool.
In the case of that, we say that water splash with the sound of “Basshaan”.
“Za-zaan”
Do you want to go to the sea in summer, don’t you?
Speaking of the sea, we associate a wave. The sound of a wave is “Za-zaan” in Japanese.
“Choro-choro”
This is “Chouzu-ya”, the place to wash your hands in a shrine.
A litte water is falling like a “Chouzu-ya”, we use the onomatopoeia “Choro-choro”.
“Do-ppaan”
A wave will be high when a typhoon is comming.
A high and strong wave strikes a land, we use the sound “Do-ppaan”.
“Buku-buku”
Suddenly asking, have you ever dived into the sea?
Under the sea, our breathing will be bubbles. The sound of bubbles is “Buku-buku” in Japanese.
“Dara-dara”
We break a sweat when we exercise hard.
The situation someone has a lot of sweat is expressed with “Dara-dara”.
“Syuwa-syuwa”,”Syuwaaa”
Finally, I’ll tell you the onomatopoeia of a carbonic water.
When you put some beer or sider into a cup, you hear the sound of bubbles.
We express that sound “Shuwa-shuwa” or “Syuwaaa”.
